On Reflection- Jane Christie
As heard on BBC Radio 2
This year sees the release of "On Reflection", the début album of Bristol-based musicians, Jane and Andy Christie (who, until recently, lived in the Charente). The album pays tribute to the family's jazz background with the inclusion of original work by John Christie senior, to whom the collaboration is dedicated. It also features inspiring arrangements of popular jazz standards such as "Cheek to Cheek" and "On Green Dolphin Street".
Jane Christie manages to combine sapient and leisurely phrasing, reminiscent of the late Carmen McRae, with a breathy vocal quality of seemingly effortless precision to produce a truly inimitable sound. If you could vocalise an Indian head massage, Jane Christie is what it would sound like!
In absolute harmony is pianist and arranger, Andy Christie, whose imaginative voicings and lyrical solos offer a perfect partner. Also supporting are bassist, John Christie (junior), drummer, Andy Tween and saxophonist and flutist, Andy Kinsman, who really adds colour with some gusty solos and melodious fills.
This album offers a delicate combination of driving swing, wistful blues and reflective ballads. "On Reflection" would be the perfect gift for a loved one, or a well-deserved treat just for yourself!
